About the Periodicals Department
Archives Room - back issues of selected periodicals have been placed in Archives located behind the periodicals office.
Arrangement of periodicals - all periodicals are arranged alphabetically word for word. Articles "of" and "the" are regarded within the title. See below:

Borrowing periodicals - journals, magazines and newspapers cannot be checked out. Only professors are allowed to check out a periodical. Graduate students may check out a periodical only when a professor signs the item(s) out or calls the supervisor in advance.
Collection Information - currently the Vining Library has more than 235 subscriptions (purchased and gift) that provide us with approximately 399 titles.
Ebscohost Electronic Journal Service - is a service of Ebscohost providing access to electronic journals subscribed to by the library. Currently only 60 journals subscribed to by the library offer free online access. For journals that are not subscribed to by the library only TOCs (tables of contents) or abstracts can be viewed and articles can be printed on a pay-per-view basis.
Periodicals on Hold - busy students may place periodicals on hold until they are able to read or copy the articles needed for assignments. Items will only be held for 7 days. After that staff will re-shelve the items. Cards containing the student's article/journal information will be retained and filed under the student's name for later reference.
West Virginia History - a card index for this journal is located near the Xerox copier. Available indexing coverage: V. 1-55, 1939 - 1996.
Wonderful WV Magazine Index - a card index for this state publication is located near the Photocopier. Indexing of this publication began with 1975 and continues to be indexed. As of July 1998 the index is maintained in a MS Access database. A printed index is available and updated once a year. The Wonderful WV Magazine is also kept inside the Periodicals Office.
